New wash press to improve sustainability and quality of pulp

Södra's pulp mill in Värö is placing an order this month for an additional wash press which will have several benefits for customers, not least in terms of sustainability, as Mehdi Arjmand, Department Manager Fiber line explains.

“This latest investment at Värö is one more step in our continual effort to offer the best pulp possible, in terms of quality but also sustainability. An extra wash press is not a necessity, but it will achieve several things. While our pulp is already well within our specifications, this investment will take cleanliness and purity up another notch while also improving tensile strength. At the same time, it means that if we decide to increase production capacity at Värö in the future, we will have the parameters in place to allow us to do so with no adverse effect on cleanliness, says Mehdi.”

“Last but by no means least, this is an investment in sustainability, because additional washing means we can reduce our effluent emissions. Furthermore, consumption of bleaching chemicals will be decreased later in the process, which will increase our pulp quality.  “Minimizing chemical consumption fits perfectly with our strategy to strive for the most sustainable pulp possible. It’s not something customers are pushing for just yet, but as environmental consciousness accelerates, minimizing our overall footprint will only become more important and we are keen to take the lead in this.”

The new press will be delivered in 2021.
