New sustainable hotel building in Eriksberg: Arken
In southeastern Sweden, in Eriksberg, the hotel building Arken is now complete, with a strong focus on sustainability and natural materials. The building is a freestanding wooden structure with three floors, where wood is the predominant material.
Södra supplies the structural frame and facade in wood
For the construction, Södra contributed with CLT and glulam for the load-bearing structures, as well as colored and fire-retardant treated spruce panels for the facade. This has resulted in a building that is not only sustainable but also naturally aesthetically pleasing.
Unique architecture and quick assembly
Arken’s architecture is unique, with a design that gives the feeling of a boat that has landed in the courtyard environment. Oskar Årevall, architect at LBE Arkitekt, describes the project as very exciting and highlights the value of wood both in construction and visual expression.
Edvin Sjöblom, site manager at Ottosson Bygg, emphasizes that the CLT elements were simple and quick to assemble. In just seven weeks, the structure was in place, delivered on a total of only 14 trucks – significantly fewer than what other materials would have required.
View over the largest Safari Park in the Nordics
The hotel is located in Eriksberg, a nature reserve and wildlife park in Blekinge, which is one of Northern Europe’s largest wildlife enclosures and the largest Safari Park in the Nordics. All hotel rooms have views over the Savannah, and some rooms have glass floors to enhance the experience of closeness to the animals and nature.
