A great summer for biomethanol
The biomethanol plant at our Mönsterås mill is a world first. While biomethanol is not new, we are the first pulp mill in the world to be producing this sustainable, forest residue alternative to fossil-based methanol. With any pioneering project, there is no precedent, so you face new challenges every day. That’s why Christer Thörn, Mönsterås’ Mill Manager, is particularly delighted with record production numbers over the summer.
“It continues to be a steep learning curve and we are far from the end of our journey,” he says, “but we have made so much progress since the plant’s inauguration 18 months ago and now we are seeing the result: the summer months really exceeded our expectations and saw our best performance so far.
“Breaking new ground is a bit like running a pilot plant at full scale, so it is very gratifying to know that we are on the right track when it comes to both quality and production. We are on a trajectory to reach our goal of 5,250 tonnes/year of biomethanol. We can now focus on maintaining stable production and raising our quality even further, which will open up the market even more for this great product – it has so much potential.”
