New solutions for greener logistics

We are introducing a new route for our pulp via the Port of Gothenburg through a completely new logistics set-up. Normally, pulp from our mill in Mönsterås arrives by rail and truck at the trans-shipment specialist Mima Terminals' facilities at the Port of Gothenburg. There, the bales are reloaded into containers for onward delivery globally.

We have now created a new option together with Mima Terminals and the container terminal operator APM Terminals to handle increased volumes and optimise transport in terms of climate. The solution will create an alternative corridor where new volumes will be transported by sea between Mönsterås and the Port of Gothenburg.

"Mima Terminal has responded quickly to our adjusted demand – reliability and flexibility are of crucial importance for our production facilities and the collaboration has worked extremely well. We have had a high utilization rate on the vessels, which makes this a solution that is both efficient and economically justifiable," says Ola Holgersson, Logistics Manager at Södra.

When a bulk carrier leaves Södra's facility in Mönsterås, it is loaded with up to 5,600 tonnes of pulp (equivalent to 140 trucks), and 36 hours later the vessel calls at the container terminal at the Port of Gothenburg, which is operated by APM Terminals. Mima Terminal unloads our time-chartered vessels and puts the pulp into containers for short-term storage before it is shipped in the container to markets further afield.
